Not sure which forum this belongs in, so I just picked this one. No suggestions, just questions. :)

I've been researching Brewtroller / Fermtroller and not really sure where it stands. There's very little activity in these forums, no Developer's updates in the forums in over a year.

Is the project dead? I read on homebrewtalk that the project went "defunct" and someone else is reviving it via a kickstarter. Is that true? I see on the kickstarter page that it was unsuccessful. What does that mean for Brewtroller?

If it's not dead, is there documentation available to download? The web pages are pretty sparse on details. Maybe there's a PDF somewhere with more info?

And I've seen reference to the Fermtroller, but no details. Is it the same controller running different software?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave.. thanks for reaching out and finding out more. The Project is still very much alive, boards are available for purchase, and development is ongoing on firmware for both BrewTroller and FermTroller. The best place to stay up to date on information is our Facebook page. I hope the forums take off again!

What kind of documentation are you looking for? There is some available on brewtoller.com under BrewTroller 101

Let me know if I can answer any questions!

Hi Adam.

I'm actually just about to pull the trigger on ordering a Phoenix board to use as a Fermtroller, but for $225, I'd be more comfortable getting more info on it. Is it a web app? What does the UI look like? Are there screen shots available anywhere? What are the pinouts of the board and how do I wire it to the relays? Does it run an OS, or pure embedded code? What's the CPU on the board? Do you use a PID algorithm for controlling the temperature? I'm an electrical engineer so these things interest me.

Basically, is there a user's manual and datasheet for it? I've searched the web site (and Facebook and Googled it) and can find nothing on the Fermtroller other than the "101" page (can't remember the exact name).

Thanks,
Dave

All good questions Dave!!

There, unfortunately, just isn't a ton of FermTroller documentation as its been a bit of a secondary use for the board. But I can try to answer your questions here, or via email.

The UI currently is via a 20x4 LCD and control is via a Rotary Encoder. So, in addition to the Phoenix Board, you will need to order the LCD, the LCD Controller, and the Encoder to get it all working. We have a Web App in the works, not sure when it will be done.

I can get you some photos if you want them. Pinouts for FermTroller are simple. Its Screw Terminals for your SSRs/Relays that control your Coolers or other devices, and then screw terminals for the 1-Wire temperature probes. You can order whatever size you want on our site as well.

The board is based of an ATMEGA 1284, and runs the standard Arduino "OS"... so its more like embeded coding.

The control is not true PID, but there are some settings you can give it for hystersis/offset to help with motor protection.

I'll see if I an get together a more comprehensive set of manuals/how-tos on setting one up in the near future.

I hope that helps!!
